Tire Tracks Painting

Hot Wheels Tire Tracks Painting

My boys love any and all toys especially anything that has wheels, and an engine. They are currently in a cars, monster truck, and construction truck phase, so I put together an activity using their hot wheels cars/monster trucks and washable paints.

This activity is an awesome combination of art and science. Using the different colors, utensils, and techniques allows your child to explore art materials/techniques to create their masterpieces. You can also incorporate the science of identifying the different ‘tracks’ after their paintings have dried. My boys liked seeing the different size tire tracks and matched up their cars to the tracks.

To get this activity started all you need is washable paint, paper, plate for the paint, paint brushes, and cars with treads on the tires(preferably with different size wheels). Let’s get playing:

This activity is relatively easy to set up(lol my favorite kind of activity)! While I was setting up I sent my boys on a scavenger hunt for their monster trucks and any kind of car or truck with treads(grooves) on the tires. Once they were occupied tracking down cars they wanted to paint with I went ahead and prepped the table with a cloth and gathered their art supplies; washable paint, paper, plate for paint, and paint brushes(optional).

After we gathered all of our supplies we got to it! I put their paints on a plate large enough to accommodate their trucks and I gave them their paint brushes to see what they would do. At first they tried painting each tire and that didn’t quite work, but we learned pretty quickly that if you put the tires directly into the pain and rolled them back and forth they would make tracks!

They painted for a good 30 or so minutes using their trucks tires, paint brushes, and their hands. When it was time to clean up we had a car wash, which is another one of our favorite activities!

After their paintings dried we took a look at the tracks they created and matched up the car/ truck that made the track. Now anytime we go outside and they see tracks on the ground they bring it up and look for the car(or animal) that made it lol. We had a lot of fun painting and learning about how different tires/things make different results.
