Seven Tips for Flying with Toddlers
Recently we flew from Ohio to California to visit family with our two toddlers. We were very fortunate that GaGa(grandma) was able to come with us.
There are a few things we did that worked out really well when flying with toddlers! There are also a few things I wish I would have done/prepared for. Below is a list of things we are going to do for/before our next time flying.
1. Workout
I know it sounds weird, but make sure you prepare by working out. This first family trip we took I didn’t even think about it beforehand. However carrying a toddler, a backpack and whatever else through the terminal takes a lot of strength. Next time we fly I am going to prepare beforehand so it takes less time to recover during the first few days of the trip.
2. Snacks
Pack lots of snacks. Snacks legit make everyone happy. My two boys get grouchy and are more prone to having meltdowns when they are hungry. Along with that make sure you pack your little ones empty water cup to fill up at the airport. This last time we traveled the flight did not provide water while we were in the air (they had soda and coffee as drink options, which are not very kid friendly).
3. Mask
As of December 2021 children 2 and up are required to wear a mask at the airport and on the plane. Something I would recommend would be to practice wearing masks with your toddler BEFORE you travel. Also pack extra masks for the kids in your carry-on. Murphy’s law seems to always happen… A mask will fall on the floor or get dirty and you’ll be thankful you packed a backup(or two… or ten).
4. Activities
Bring extra activities and books/entertainment. Kids naturally do not want to sit down for extended periods of time so packing things to keep them busy is super valuable.
5. Stroller
Check with the airline you are flying with to make sure this is true for all airlines, but if you are taking your stroller to your destination bring it all the way to the gate. Once you are at the gate they can stow it underneath then you board the plane. If you request it before stowing they will bring it to the gate upon landing. This was super convenient when traveling with two little ones.
6. Sanitizer
Bring sanitizer and sanitizing wipes. Kids love to touch everything and planes can be super dirty so make sure you wipe down your seats and trays when you get on the plane.
7. Clothing
Wear easily removable layers and dress your little ones in matching outfits and/or bright identifiable colors. As you can see we put our little ones in highlighter color sweatshirts. If they were to wander off in all the commotion it is easier to find them!
Bonus Tip
Buy small gifts or gift cards for the flight crew. The flight crew is working hard at keeping everyone happy and safe while following regulations, it’s a nice gesture that goes a long way.
