Color Mixing Science
This is a great activity for toddlers and young kids! My 3 year old and 5 year old both love it and what makes it better is that it’s a super simple and easy activity.
This activity is awesome for toddlers to learn their colors as well as see what happens when you mix different colors together. When we are doing this activity I like to ask my oldest what they think will happen, or what do they notice when they mix two different colors together. I will ask my youngest what the colors are and ask which colors they are going to mix together to help them learn their colors and to think ahead.
First, I gathered all my materials; 1.5 cups water, food dye, liquid droppers (we like these ones), bowls, toothpicks, and a paint tray palette.

This activity is truly easy to set up, all you have to do is divide the water into three bowls or cups(I recommend to use white or clear cups so the little ones can see what the colors are). Add a few drop of blue food color to the first bowl and then do the same with the yellow and red in the second and third bowl.

After the color bowls are prepped you can hand the droppers to your little one and let them get to mixing and experimenting!
Some good questions to ask your child or children would be:
- What color is this?
- What colors are you going to use?
- What color do you think that will make?
- What color did you make?
- What did you notice when you added more of one color?
- What two colors make purple? How about green or orange?
Once they run out of space in their tray you can rinse the tray off and repeat as long as your little one wants (or until the color bowls run out).

Color science is an awesome activity for toddlers to learn their colors as well as see what happens when you mix different colors together. My children get such a kick out of this activity because they feel like little scientists using droppers to mix the colors.
